Correct candle care begins before the flame appears. The way you store your candle, trim the wick, and prepare the space around it will shape how well it burns. These quiet choices matter more than most people realise.

I have seen too many candles burn unevenly, drown in their own wax, or smoke until the walls darken. Most of it comes down to simple habits that take less than a minute. When you know what to watch for, the flame behaves better every time.

These are the practices I use at home and in the shop. They should be followed every time you burn a candle, not only for safety, but to help your candle last longer.

Correct candle care begins with the first burn. Keep the flame lit long enough for the wax pool to reach every edge. Most candles need at least two hours, sometimes longer depending on their size. This helps the wax set a clear memory. If you extinguish the flame too early, the wax tunnels. The wick sinks, struggles to breathe, and may disappear completely beneath the surface. Once this has happened, you may be able to dig the wick out and relit it. However, in most cases, the candle should no longer be used for any spellwork as its a clear sign that it’s just not going to happen.

Choose proper holders as part of correct candle care. Thick glass or ceramic protects surfaces and holds the melted wax in place. A votive on its own might last five hours, but inside a safe container, it can burn for fifteen or more. Never use metal. It retains heat, warps surfaces, and becomes dangerous to move once hot.

Trim the wick before each burn. Keep it close to half a centimetre. This small step supports correct candle care by preventing soot, reducing smoke, and encouraging a steady melt. A long wick burns the wax unevenly and creates a flame that rises too high, wasting both wax and time.

Some believe freezing helps candles last longer. I avoid this. Freezing can crack the wax, distort the shape, and dull the colour. With handmade candles, those changes can shift the way they burn. If you try it, limit the time to a few hours and inspect the candle closely before lighting. Damage from freezing works against correct candle care rather than improving it.

Correct Candle Care Checklist

  • Extinguish every flame before leaving the room
  • Keep candles away from curtains, papers, herbs, and wood
  • Use only holders made for burning candles
  • Keep flames away from air vents and fans
  • Do not touch liquid wax or move a candle while it burns
  • Leave at least six centimetres between burning candles
  • Use a snuffer or blow gently with your hand cupped behind the flame
  • Do not use water to put out any candle
  • Trim the wick every time before relighting
  • Stop burning if the flame flickers, flares, or smokes
  • Remove all ribbons, charms, and labels before lighting
  • Dust off any herbs around the wick before use
  • Keep candles away from children and animals
  • Never leave any candle unattended

Respect the Flame

Correct candle care begins with intention and continues with attention. Wax remembers how you treated it. That first burn, that steady trimming, that quiet moment when you watched the flame rather than walked away. All of it shapes the way a candle serves your space and your spellwork.

I always think of candles like the ocean. Never turn your back to it. While the flame may seem small and steady, things can shift quickly when you stop paying attention. What begins as safe and warm can slip into chaos the moment your focus leaves the room.
